The "non-religion" of Shinto consists of veneration of nature and remembrance and respect of ancestors. The kami, or spirits, of Shinto are not usually deities or gods as such, but the force of nature or spirit of vitality dwelling within.
A martial arts dojo will have a shinden inside, to which all the students will bow in clearing their minds of outside worries before practice. A typical Japanese home will have a shinden inside, and small offerings (dishes of rice, salt, sake) will be left to honor the ancestors.
This shinden was donated to San Mateo by its sister city, Toyonaka, Japan.
