For nearly 100 years, the Sweat-Comings furniture factory produced high quality furniture for which customers were willing to wait a year or more after ordering. The last remaining Comings heir, as the final blow in various running battles with the town, closed the plant in the early 1990s. In a town of 2,500, fifty or more workers suddenly out of a job was hard to take.
The plant buildings remained idle for more than ten years. One was torn down, as was a portion of the second. In 2006, the remaining usable structure was rehabilitated, and now houses a grocery store, the area's health center, and senior apartments.
The building adjacent to the stack had its upper floor removed and capped, and is now used by the town for equipment storage. The site is clearly visible in Google maps, but the image is a from before the rehabilitation.
