"Pho Lucky" is a sit-down restaurant inside the Lucky Seafood grocery store at the northeast corner of Mira Mesa Blvd. and Black Mountain Road in San Diego. As the name implies, pho (Vietnamese noodle soup with a wide choice of meats or seafood added) is the main attraction, with non-soup noodle and rice dishes as well. Vietnamese lemon drinks and coffee are available, as is beer.
The menu is pretty similar to the other pho shops in the neighborhood, but in my opinion, Lucky's broth is the most flavorful among the nearby choices. (The guy who writes the authoritative "mmm-yoso" Asian-food blog in San Diego agrees.) Regular-size bowls of pho run about $5; fancier offerings such as Bun Bo Hue (a spicier soup with more ingredients), or larger-size bowls of pho, are a bit more. The pho is served with the traditional accompaniments -- basil leaves, lime, hot pepper slices, bean sprouts, sriracha hot sauce, crushed-chili-pepper hot sauce, and oyster sauce, which you can add to the soup or leave out, as you wish. They don't put vials of nuoc man (fish sauce) on the tables, but if you ask for it the will bring you some.
The restaurant opens at 8:00 a.m. daily and stays open (I think) until 9:00 p.m. -- at least that's the closing time for the grocery store. The atmosphere is kind of sterile, but the service is efficient and the food is very good. They usually have English-language CNN News on a TV on the wall, with the sound turned off.
