The 9/11 Memorial is a stone pavilion constructed on the front lawn of the Tewksbury Public Library and is surrounded by a walkway that contains 2,973 bricks, or pavers, each one bearing the name of a victim who perished as a result of the attacks, which took place in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and a field in Shanksville, Pa. The Tewksbury 9-11 Memorial dedication was held on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 beginning at 8:46 a.m., the exact moment when the first plane crashed. Two Tewksbury residents perished in the 9-11 attackes, both were on American Airlines Flight 11 that crashed in to the North Tower of the Twin Towers in New York: Peter Gay and Peter Hashen. These two individuals each have a special plaque with their likeness represented, mounted on the marble pillars of the pavillion.
