This is the second movie in the Resident Evil franchise, that originated from a popular Nintendo video game franchise. The movie centers around a zombie population that is unleashed upon humanity after an accident at a viral research facility. This movie resumes after the protagonist escapes the facility in the first movie and now Racoon City is under a military quarantine. Is all hope lost for the inhabitants of our once peaceful city?
Resident Evil: Apocalypse was filmed in many locations around Toronto. The director's didn't even try to hide the fact that Toronto was filling in for "Racoon City". Many familiar landmarks are clearly seen during the film. The franchise is known in Japan as "Biohazard"
The climax of the movie takes place in the public square known as "Nathan Phillips Square" that is part of Toronto's City Hall. In various scenes you can see the iconic towers of Toronto's municipal government as helicopters circle and land, soldiers run about and the main character, Alice (played my Milla Jovovich) even runs down the side of the west tower. In one scene Alice looks out over Toronto from the top of the west tower and you can see familiar landmarks including Scotia Tower, First Canadian Place and, yes, the CN Tower.
Other Toronto locations that are spotted in the movie: Westwood Theatre is used in a battle scene and the Bloor Street bridge over the Don Valley fills in nicely for a barricaded bridge to Racoon City - the barricades are real, they were attached to the bridge to reduce the number of people jumping off the bridge to commit suicide.
Resident Evil is not the only movie filmed here:
1980: "The Kidnapping of the President" - used the location for a kidnapping scene
2006: The Sentinel - an assassination attempt was filmed here
Movie or TV Show: Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Year Released or First Aired: 2,004.00
