Marker For Laconia Circle. A circular levee near Snow Lake, Arkansas.

This circular levee was built in the 1800's to protect houses and farmlands that were frequently flooded by the Mississippi River. The levee has broken several times. Including during floods in 1883, 1890, and 1927. The paint is worn on the sign so I have included the text here:
"Laconia Circle Mississippi Township: This is Laconia Circle-18,000 acres of delta land is encircled by levees for protection against floods. The township, named for the river, was one of the original townships of the county and was first settled by the Spanish. Prior to the Civil War there were 16 palatial plantation homes, two of which remain (James Thornton and P.B. Martin residences constructed in 1833-the oldest residences in the county). Early steamboat landings and post offices were at Knowlton, Henrico, Beith's, and Laconia on the Mississippi River."
There were also a break in the Levee at Knowlton in 1927.
