In 1704, at age 26, Stanislas was elected king of Poland; the following year he was crowned. He reigned until 1709, when he was deposed by August II. He regained power briefly from 1733 to 1736 in the War of Polish Succession, but ultimately lost power again. As a consolation prize, he was given the Duchy of Lorraine by his son-in-law, Louis XV of France.
