Toward the end of the Blackhawk War on July 10, 1832, Abraham Lincoln was honorably discharged from the service in Cold Spring. He camped overnight in this immediate vicinity. His horse was stolen during the night, and he walked and canoed home to New Salem, Illinois, a distance of about 250 miles.
