The library has about 5000 volumes, mostly reference, for use by the astronomers that come to use the observatory instruments. The building dates back to 1899. Public access is limited to Thursday and Friday, and by appointment only. The observatory is part of the University of Pittsburgh, and students and faculty have priority access.
