The outside of the Capital Hill Branch of the Seattle Public Library system is wrapped in stainless steel lattice, providing a space for evergreen and deciduous vines to grow. This branch opened May 31, 2003. The piece was designed by artist Iole Alessandrini. Alessandrini is Italian born but has lived in Seattle since 1994. She has a number of pieces in the greater Seattle area that incorporate living things into the art. This piece at the library is meant to blend together the urban environment with the natural world.

To truly appreciate this piece, make sure to view multiple sides of the library. Walking a bit away from the library and looking back gives a nice sense of the size of the lattice as well as the vines. Since the piece is on the outside of the library, it can be viewed anytime. The nearby street allow street parking, but availability may be difficult. There is a parking garage under the library for patrons only that operates during library hours.
