The school board of East Cleveland solicited Andrew Carnegie for a library grant in 1913. The next year, they received a relatively large $35,000 grant. The school board purchased a lot, and John D. Rockefeller donated money to buy some adjacent land. In 1916, the Dutch Revival building was opened. Two branch libraries would later be opened in East Cleveland.

The Carnegie library was expanded in 1952. This included the addition of an auditorium. The library was renovated in 1989. Wireless internet access is available, as are computer labs, fax service, childrens’ programs, and computer classes. The East Cleveland library boasts a large collection of local history and Black heritage resources.
