The San Francisco Bay Trail currently consists of 290 miles of recreational corridor (not all continuous) encircling SF Bay. Most of the trail is within sight of the water. Parts of the trail are routed along city sidewalks or paved bike lanes, but the majority of miles are hard-packed gravel or dirt paths such as this segment. This particular trailhead is perfect for a quick lunchtime 4-1/2 mile loop on the dirt track, and connects to the much longer loop around the National Wildlife Refuge, also on levee-top dirt. The SF Bay Trail is multi-use everywhere and walkers and runners are at least as common as cyclists. The total milage makes a bicycle the best way to be able to explore the whole length.
