The Big Sur coast part of Highway 1 was California's first National Scenic Byway, designated in September 1996.

At a sunny day, there are more scenic stops than we can possible list here and most of the coast looks somewhat like in this picture.
But then again, half the time the coast is covered in a thick blanket of fog and the scenic drive looks somewhat like in the picture to the right.

At days like that, you need an elevated vista point and we found a tiny, windy road that took us 1,000 ft above sea level and 100 ft above the clouds.

We were on our way to the New Camaldoli Hermitage, not knowing what to expect on this foggy day, when all of the sudden the fog disappeared and we found ourselves at this amazing overlook above the clouds!
