South Hannibal Federated Church Cemetery - S. Hannibal, N.Y. - Worldwide Cemeteries on Waymarking.com

This cemetery started out behind the South Hannibal Church back in the early 1800's. Sadly, the wife of one of the ministers for the church, while living in the parsonage, removed the headstones to almost all of the graves and laid them down as sidewalk from the parsonage to the church. The members of the church were furious about this and insisted that the stones be put back where they belonged. However, no-one could figure out which stone belonged with which grave, so the stones were stacked next to the church for safe keeping. In recent years, the current owners of the church have taken the stones that are left and have reinstalled them in front of the church in an area now referred to as the "Memory Garden". The original cemetery contained around 40 graves.

A curious twist to this story is that after researching this churchyard cemetery, I decided I would take the drive out there and check it out. While I was there, I met the current owner of the church, as he was out watering the flowers in the front yard. We talked for a few minutes about the history of the church and cemetery, then he volunteered to email me the rest of the history on this church and surrounding area. I then proceeded to write my email address down for him, and after handing it to him, he asked which "Howell" family I belonged to and I told him. He then said, "oh, you mean my Uncle Frank"? As it turned out, the gentleman in the front yard that day was my cousin on my fathers side, whom I hadn't seen in about 40 years! Just another example of what a small world we all live in!....
