Built in 1852 on the site of the town's original Meeting House, the Center School helped Sturbridge consolidate its outlying one-room district schools. It continued as a site for elementary education until the 1950s, when the present Burgess Elementary School was constructed. From that time until 1988, the Center School housed many town offices, including the Sturbridge Police Department. The adjacent Old Buring Ground was the town's first cemetery, and is the final resting place for many of the original settlers, including Experience Deneson Wheelock, "The first Childe Born in this Town".

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
