Eternal Flame - Places of Geologic Significance on Waymarking.com

This wonderful sight is located in Chestnut Ridge Park off of Seufert Rd just south of Buffalo, NY. The Eternal Flame is the result of a natural methane leak in the rock. It sits in a little grotto that is located in the face of the rock behind a small waterfall. As a result the water from the creek is usually falling in front of the flame.

The number of flames and height can vary with anywhere from 1 - 3 being seen at any one time. When I was there only 1 big flame was seen with a much smaller one beside it.

The hike to the site is about 1.3 miles thru the park and the trail is marked with a series of blue wooden blocks attached to the trees. To get to the falls you have to descend into a gorge and follow the stream up to the end. The temperature difference between the bottom of the gorge and the trail above can be several degrees even in summer.
