The land is commonly called The Foreland or Handfast Point and Old Harry is a smaller rock further to the south of the large rocks near the Pinical at the end of the headland. Old Harry's Wife used to stand next to him but collapsed over fifty years ago and now can only be seen at very low tides.
The bright, white chalk cliffs are the most easterly of the Dorset World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. Old Harry is where the cliffs broke and divided when the Isle of Wight was formed millions of years ago. The same bright white cliffs are what you see as The Needles some few miles away across The Solent.
