Gatesway is a non-profit organization that provides people with developmental
disabilities the ability to live and work in the community and improve their
quality of life. Founded in 1963, by Helen Gates who had a son with Down's
Syndrome.
Gatesway organizes a weekend long Gatesway Balloon Festival every year around
the first of August. The festival is held along the Arkansas River at the
Riverparks West Festival Park. The event has a Friday night balloon glow and a Saturday
morning balloon ascent which are two highlights of the festival. It also
features musical entertainment and activities for the kids. The admission is
free but there is a parking fee.
