Now the Wilmette Park District's Community Recreation Center & Fitness Club, this building once housed Bell Elementary School. The building was renovated in 1995 from office buildings (what was there at the time) to a rec center after the rec center at the time was converted back into a school (Highcrest Middle School).
The school was named after Millard D. Bell, former superintendent of the Wilmette Public Schools in the 1940s and 1950s. The school was dedicated in December 1965 in response to the Baby Boom, and closed in 1977 due to declining enrollment. According to a Chicago Tribune article, it cost $1,436,010 and at opening held 750 students. The school was converted into an office complex by late 1980.
