This parking area is the main trailhead for the South Unit trails of Bald Mountain. The outside Red Loop is 4.8 miles. It is hilly with a few large hills. Because one 1/4 mile of the trail is repeated, you go over the largest hill in both directions. Trail is mostly clear, a few roots and rocks, one area in the NE corner has erosion steps. Can be very muddy in spring and after heavy rain.
State park permit required for vehicles, available one mile east at the park HQ:
Annual Resident: $24
Annual Non-Resident: $29
Daily Resident: $6
Daily Non-Resident: $8
Senior Annual: $6
Exit 81 on I-75 to M-24/Lapeer Rd. North about three miles to Greenshield (look for signs indicating shooting range or park headquarters). East on Greenshield about 1/2 mile. See headquarters for maps and vehicle registration.
