In the life of a mill village, the mill bell was an important means of communication. The bell was used to call workers to the mill, signal shift changes, sound emergency alarms, and ring out in public celebrations. This bell was housed on top of Riverdale Mill in Enoree, SC, for over 110 years. The absence of foundry markings on the bell, its unusual form and rough surface suggest it may have been made on site. Today the bell stands as a symbol of the rich textile history of Spartanburg County.
