This statue is a memorial to Big Bill Murphy, the hero of the Belmont mine fire of 1911, in Tonopah Nevada and was erected in 2006.
"Big Bill Murphy stands immortal on the corner of a surprisingly grandiose post office, head uplifted to a 1911 February sky, legs straining as he carries one of many miners up to safety. He returned numerous times, but made a final journey into the shaft and never saw daylight again. Across the street, painted on the side of an abandoned store, almost garish in its vividness, is a mural of a parade held in his honor. On the corner is his likeness rising from the smoke, sweat pouring down his brow and fear and confusion in his eyes.
The grimness of death was common then, and perhaps that is why there are no streets named after him. May our current softness allow for the pain and compassion the past did not leave room for."
