These piers protect the fishing port of Aberaeron from the winds that can sometimes lash these coasts. The look-out tower on the pier was opened in 1993. A placque in the look-out tower describes how the pier was begun in 1807 and finished in 1809 and thanks the Mayor of Aberaeron for providing the funding for building the pier.
