Created by F.H. Happersberger and dedicated to San Francisco by James Lick in 1894, San Francisco's Pioneer Monument was one of the few free-standing structures that withstood the 1906 earthquake. The bear , spear and shield on the monument symbolize California. At the base of the monument are some of California's earliest pioneers, including Sir Francis Drake and John Sutter.
The monument was moved after the 1906 earthquake.
