The marker states:
Dedicated to all U.S. Merchant Marine Seamen
Members of the U.S. Merchant Marines serving world wide aboard U.S. Flag cargo ships during World War II suffered a greater percentage of war-related deaths than did all of the nation's regular armed forces combined. 733 U.S. Merchant ships were lost.
The Merchant Marine seamen suffered losses of 3.4% of the over 200,000 serving, with 6,798 killed. The total of all other armed services suffered losses of 1.78%.
We were granted U.S. Armed Forces veteran status January 19, 1986. National maritime day is May 22nd.
Paid for and installed by the members of the Sacramento Valley Chapter American Merchant Marine Veterans (AMMV) their families, and friends. This chapter was founded 2/1/91.
