A popular stop in Colorado, this train requires a "cog drive" to climb the steep rails (properly called a Rack Railway). It is the highest of its type in the world. Bighorn sheep are often seen above timberline. The engines are built with a permanent pitch. Abbreviated schedule in winter. In the summertime guests can buy a one-way ticket, then walk approx 13 miles back to the station. It was opened in 1891, and has an elevation gain of approx 8000 feet. Open dates depend on snow levels around the tracks.
