Construction began around the 1070's for what became to be known as the White Tower. Over the centuries additional walls, towers, and a moat forming a dual-layer fortress.
The Tower's has not only served as a fortress but also as a royal palace and prison. It has also served as a place of execution, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, a mint, a public records office, an observatory, and the home of the Crown Jewels - to which it still hosts today.
The Tower of London is open every day for tours except for December 24-26 and January 1. The admission fee for an adult is £16.50 and £9.50 for children under 16.
