General of the Air Force Henry Harley "Hap" Arnold was an aviation pioneer and Chief of the United States Army Air Corps and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Forces. He was the first and only General of the Air Force (in 1949). He is also the only American to achieve five-star rank in two of its armed services. Arnold became a powerful advocate for creation of an independent Air Force.
