These beautiful gates are open, leading you to a courtyard prior to entering the library. They were designed by Seattle artist George Tsutakawa. They were installed at the library prior to the recent remodel. During the remodel of the library, they as well as the courtyard were integrated into the new design. The new design of the library highlights all the older brickwork. Despite much searching, I can't find any information on when the gates were installed. If anyone knows (or remembers seeing them at the library for a long time), please post in your log.
Tsutakawa passed away in 1997 and is best known for his fountain designs. His fountains can be found all over the Seattle area. I haven't looked, but I would guess that some of his fountains were part of the Seattle Art and Seek Challenge as well. Tsutakawa designed so many pieces for King County that Monday April 6, 1998 was declared George Tsutakawa day.
The gates are available for viewing even when the library is closed. During the library's open hours, parking is available under the building. There is street parking available as well. Behind and to the side of the library is a nice park with benches, grass, and a play area. There is a cache there as well.
