This location is a great place for railfans. It is on the CSX W&A (Western & Atlantic) Subdivision and trains pass quite frequently. There is an 11,347 foot siding here for trains to hold while waiting for others to clear the tunnel.

Not only can you watch the trains pass by, but there is a museum and two train tunnels. One tunnel is still active and you can watch them enter and exit if you can find the right spot. The second tunnel has been preserved and walking tours are available.

Plans are to build an actual train watching platform. Hopefully it will be built high enough to provide a better vantage point to see the tunnels. You can watch trains from just about anywhere in the area.

It also has a nice area to park that allows train watching while sitting in your car. This could be nice for the elderly, handicapped or during bad weather.

Across the tracks from the Heritage Center is the old Western & Atlantic freight depot, plans are for it to be preserved and restored. There is a fee for the museum and to walk the tunnel, but the trains are free to see from the museum and surrounding grounds.

Don't forget to program you scanner radio to the CSX road channels so you can listen in! Frequencies used are road channel 161.370 dispatcher is 161.520.

You can find out more about this location and tunnel tour by visiting the Heritage Center link below. The Heritage Center is closed on Sunday, but the park is still open.

Note: The image descriptions are reversed but not the pictures! Northbound is actually southbound and vice versa. Sorry for the mix up.
