Long Description:
In November 2001, a group of people in DeWitt embarked upon a project to obtain a piece of debris from the World Trade Center to create a memorial to the victims of 9/11. They were able to obtain a battered and twisted steel column, 21 feet high weighing approximately 6 tons. The force of the collapse and intense heat bent the column causing it to list about four degrees in the direction it fell. The steel plates jutting from the side where the floor supports were attached were cut free with a torch to release it from other wreckage. Bronze plaques are mounted on this area. The top is crowned with a sculpture of two textured stainless steel flames representing the twin towers of the WTC signifying light and hope for the future – two beacons of freedom, reminders that united we stand.
