Jericho, Vermont (pop. 5,015), was named for the Biblical Jericho, in the West Bank of the Palestinian territories (pop. 20,400), which is believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world (11,000 years, give or take). This Jericho has been a town only since 1763.
The name may be derived from the Hebrew/Canaanite word meaning "moon," as the Palestinian city was an early center for worship of lunar deities.
In what could be called an early variant of gerrymandering, the story is told of one Jedediah Lane, who moved here from Connecticut, eventually to become the town's representative in the Legislature. When a land survey was completed, it was discovered that Lane actually lived in Underhill, the next town to the east. Not wanting to lose his job, Lane had his house moved a few feet west, over the line into Jericho.
I suggest looking for another representation of the name in order to post a visit. Photographing this sign requires pulling off the highway into the mouth of a private driveway to get out of traffic.
