Orpheum Theatre and Site (a.k.a. Majestic Theatre) - Dubuque, IA - U.S. National Register of Historic Places on Waymarking.com

After a devistating fire destroyed the old Bijou Theater in 1910, the Majestic Theater was designed and built by C.W. and George L. Rapp shortly thereafter.

In 1933 it was renamed as the Orpheum Theater. As time progressed, the building fell into disrepair to the point it was slated for demolition in 1969.

A grassroots civic group gathered support to save the building from destruction. The group purchased the building and restored and enhanced the old theater as a civic center which reopened in 1979 as the Five Flags Civic Center.

It is so named for the five flags that have flown over Dubuque:
· Fleur de Lis of Imperial France (1673-1763)
· Royal Flag of Spain (1763-1803)
· Union Jack of England (1780)
· French Republic Flag of Napoleon (1803)
· Americian Stars and Stripes (1803-Present)

Inside there are two meeting rooms one named the Orpheum Room and the other the Majestic Room.
