Whitinsville was a typical factory village, with factories, houses, and other community features. In the small, red brick mill on Douglas Street, the Whitin Machine Works started and grew. When it outgrew this mill, the compay built a new mill and in later years the company continued to add on when needed. At one time the Whitin Machine Works was the largest textile machinery company in the world and dwarfed any other industrial activity in the area. Over time, however, the orders dwindled until the factory was closed down. Today, the complex is occupied by other companies. The Whitin family lived in mansions in town. One of them was torn down, but the foundation remains.
Though I can't find the list of what buildings are covered, there are many interesting structures around. There is a brochure that is a walking trail through the village that have several stations to stop and read up on. Highlights include the granite mill, the red brick mill, various houses and sites of houses, and the community center. The link to the brochure is listed in the web site field.
Whitinsville lies within the town of Northbridge, which has other locations with mills.
