Long Description:Gothic frame church with gabled steeple, built in 1878 as religious
and cultural center for area’s Swedish immigrants.
One settler, Charles E. Johnson erected the church beginning May
1st. Each male member of the congregation was assessed $3 and each
female $1.50. This paid for 32 pews and 2 stoves. A 4 bedroom
pasonage was built the following year along with horse stalls and a
fence on the north side of the property to be used as hitching
posts.
The church measures 40 X 70 feet and is one story tall with a
gabled roof and a highly distinctive tower and roof. A bell was
made in New York by the Neely Company for $500 (in 1892). There are
4 Gothic arched windows on either side of the church.
The church was organized as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran
Church of Welch on December 27, 1873 by Mr. Norelius, who is
referred to as the father of Swedish Churches in Minnesota.
