This memorial consists of a marble plaque mounted onto a natural granite boulder. The memorial is located just outside of the southwest corner of a 10 acre Japanese Tea Garden located within Central Park in Downtown San Mateo at the intersection of South San Mateo Drive and East 5th Avenue. Central Park is a lush example of towering Redwood trees and other flora native to the San Francisco peninsula area of northern California.

The 442 Regimental Combat Team was comprised of American citizens of Japanese ancestry. The 442nd served with great distinction, valor(21 Medals of Honor) and pride in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The 442nd RCT was the highest decorated unit during World War II and is arguably the highest decorated unit in the history of the United States Army.

Memorial is to the right, and 30 yards south, of the entrance to the tea garden. Also within this park are memorials to all veterans and a 101st Airborne memorial to those who served in the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars.
