An electrical short started the tragic Chicago Stockyards Fire on Dec. 22, 1910. Twenty-one firefighters and the city's chief fire marshal lost their lives battling that blaze. Prior to Sept 11, 2001 this fire was the deadliest in the nation's history for firemen fatalities.
The memorial's appearance has been controversial from the day it was unveiled. The names of all firefighters and paramedics who have died in the line of duty in Chicago are inscribed.
