 Amboy Crater is an extinct cinder cone with an adjacent lava field. It lies within a 27 sq miles large lava field in the south of California's Mojave Desert 2.5 miles west of the town of Amboy.

The crater is about 6,000 years old. It lies 944 feet above sea level, and about 250 feet above the surrounding lava fields. It may have been last active as close as 500 years ago.

The area became a National Natural Landmark in May 1973. At the same time, another, larger lava field, the Cinder Cones National Area 46 miles north of Amboy also became a NNL.

There is a trail leading to the top. We didn't have to time to climb it, but we were told it is unmarked, steep, and rocky. Wikipedia has a very good picture from the inside of the crater.
