The first Trinity Episcopal Church was originally located across the Canal from this location and served the community for over 50 years. The congregation decided it was time for a new and larger church to be built and chose the current location on Fall Street, next to the man-made Van Cleef Lake. The cornerstone was laid on June 2nd 1885, with the church being completed in early 1886. The first services were held here on Easter Sunday, April 24th, 1886. The Church was designed by two Troy, New York architects, using blue limestone from a nearby quarry. The combination of Early English and Gothic style, along with Romanesque interior elements gave the church a unique flair. Some items in the new church were re-used from the old church, such as the Altar, church bell, and some of the windows. Some of the windows in the new church are considered priceless as they were made by Louis Tiffany Studios.
In more recent years, concern began to rise as the Seneca-Cayuga Canal, which flows past the church began to widen its banks, closing the gap from 30 feet down to about 5 feet from the church. However, the parishioners were successful in gaining assistance from state and federal entities to build a wall along the canal bank to prevent any further loss of church land to the flowing water.
