The five bronze statues in the "Corps of Discovery" monument include Seaman, the Newfoundland dog who accompanied his master Meriwether Lewis on a great adventure in 1804-1806.
The others in the statue group include Meriwether Lewis, the leader; William Clark, his co-captain surveyor and mapper; York, Clark's manservant, and George Drouillard, the very capable civilian guide and interpreter. Together they formed the "Captains' Mess" in June 1804.
During the bicentenial, several local Newfoundland dogs (Hartsburg, Missouri) became reenactors for Seaman, and were very popular with school children. One of these Newfoundlands took part in the dedication ceremonies on June 4,2008.
The new "Seaman in bronze" is also popular with children and adults visiting the trailhead plaza. Dogs are of course welcome to visit the new plaza, and are pleased that the plaza designer remembered them with a water fountain especially for them.
