Banner County is one of eleven Nebraska counties with a population under 1000. The county was one of five split from Cheyenne County in 1888. Harrisburg, an unincorporated village, is the only town in the 746 square mile county, which had a population of 819 in the 2000 census.
Although Harrisburg does not have a gas station it has in addition to the modern one story courthouse, a bank, two churches, a fire station a large k-12 school which serves the entire county, a very interesting historical museum complex, and several geocaches.
