In Japanese tradition when you fold 1000 oragami cranes the crane will grant you a wish such as long life or recovery from illness. Sadako Sasaki was a child in Hiroshima when it was bombed. Sadako developed leukemia. While in the hospital a friend told her the legend of 1000 cranes. Sadako made it to 644 cranes before passing away. Her friends finish the 1000 cranes to escort her to the next life.
