This was the site of the Alvis factory from 1922 until it closed in the 1980s. For most of its existance the factory produced the iconic Alvis cars and later the military vehicles.
The factory suffered bomb damage in WWII but resumed production in 1946. During this period the factory was also producing arecraft engines for Rolls-Royce.
Production of cars ceased on the site in 1967 but military vehicle manufacture continued.
The shopping centre on the site is called the Alvis retail Park and was opened by Princess Margaret in 1992.
