This statue is located on the west side Palm Canyon Drive. It's a busy site, surrounded by shops, but the statue is clearly visible to pedestrians and drivers alike. Behind it is a fountain, and there are plenty of places to grab food and “people watch,” or you can stroll the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, honoring famous people with ties to this popular vacation destination. Sonny Bono's musical career began in the 1960’s when he worked for Phil Spector, but he is best known for being the shorter half of a duo with his then-wife. While Cher received more attention for her musical presence and talent, Sonny was instrumental in the writing, arranging, and producing of many of their hit songs, including “I Got You, Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” He took bit parts in movies and t.v. shows later in life, but his best-remembered acting effort was The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which ran from 1971 to 1974. His political accomplishments include Palm Springs Mayor, U.S. Representative (1994, representing the 44th Congressional District of CA), and the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Law (1998), which extended copyright in the U.S. by 20 years. He also brought national attention to the restoration efforts for the Salton Sea. Bono died in 1998 from injuries after hitting a tree while skiing in Tahoe. He was 62 years old. His third wife and widow, Mary Whitaker Bono, filled out his Congressional term, and has continued her political career. He is survived by Mary and his three daughters, Chastity (with Cher), Chesare, and Chianna (both with Mary).
