KEYES PARK
City Dedication
Veterans Memorial

The land for this City Park was donated by Chester A. Keyes who is considered the "Father of Du Quoin." He platted the city and it was officially dedicated on September 20, 1853.
Du Quoin was incorporated as a town in 1865 and the first Mayor was G.S. Smith.
Du Quoin inherited its name from an old Kakskaskian Indian Chief named Chief Jean Baptiste DuCoigne.

Who Put it Here?: The City of Du Quoin.

Description of Memorial:
Flag pole rising from the center of a stubby marble obelisk, resting upon a huge stone circle base, surrounded by a circular sidewalk, with 5 sidewalks spiraling from the center like the spokes of a wheel. Du Quoin is the site of the Illinois State Fair, and not far from the quiet park is the fairgrounds. Second, I am told, in size and attendance to the huge affair in Texas. This fair has held many midget auto races, and many trotting horse races, the main trotter race is among the largest in the world. Sort of the trotters version of the Kentucky Derby.
