The original statue, which was found in 1863 on the island of Samothrace in the Aegean Sea, now has the place of honor in the LOUVRE museum in Paris. By an unknown Greek sculptor, the exact date of it's creation has not been determined. Some scholars place its date around 300 B.C.
A woman standing with outspread wings on the prow of a ship, she commemorates the embodiment of the emotions of triumphal victory.
This replica, by Andrea Raffo of Pietrasanta, Italy, was carved from a block of marble weighing 21 tons and coming from the same Carrara quarry which provided the marble for Michelangelo.
The WINGED VICTORY OF SAMOTHRACE is one of the finest achievements of Hellenistic sculpture.
