"The Stop of Hooker's Band in East Hartford before Crossing the River" by Alton S. Tobey, 1940. Also known as "The Founders of Hartford," this mural is inside the post office building at 850 Main St.

While studying at Yale University, Alton S. Tobey won a Public Works Administration national competition. Painted in Egg Tempura, the mural measures 5 feet by 13 feet.
This has been my Post office since 1992. I never noticed this mural until last year. Located on a south wall, it never gets any direct sunlight. It was restored in 1993 and appears to be in good condition. I found a web page that said that it was damaged and only half of it remained. Maybe the 1993 restoration corrected this?
Available during normal (post office) business hours.
