Miacomet Pond is one of Nantucket Island's "Long Ponds". At its maximum, the pond is 100 yards waide. The appearance of the pond is like that of a river. It narrows at its head to about ten to twenty feet in width. The greatest depth of the pond is reported to be twenty feet; however depths of thirty feet have been reported towards the barrier beach at the ponds southern end.
The pond is occasionally opened to the sea. The pond was the scene of controversy in the late 1980's, when a local environmental activist opened the pond. Snapping turtles are found in the pond as are perch, pumpkin seed sunfish, and pickerel.
