According to Bruce Bjornstad’s “On the Trail of the Ice Age Floods," Sentinel Gap is a flood-enlarged gap of the Columbia River cut through the west end of the Saddle Mountains. It is located along SR 243 about five miles south of Wanapum Dam. During the Ice Age flooding, Sentinel Gap was one of four major routes for floodwaters entering Pasco Basin. After passing through Sentinel Gap, floodwaters expanded and decelerated. According to J Harlen Bretz, a deep hole exists in the channel beneath Sentinel Gap, perhaps a result of whirlpool-like turbulent forces during flooding. The coordinates are the viewpoint north of the Vantage Bridge.
