This was the worst ground-related aircraft disaster in the United States at the time, and is still considered the worst in California to this day. According to the Check-Six website, 28 people were also badly burned or injured resulting in the creation of Sacramento's burn unit (Firefighters Burn Institute) a year later. The pilot was helped from the wreckage by bystanders and survived the crash with a broken arm and facial cuts. "One survivor, only eight-years-old, lost nine family members in the conflagration: both parents, two brothers, a sister, two grandparents and two cousins, and one entire family of four was wiped out completely." Kerri Frances McKlusky (The sole survivor who lost her twin sister and entire family) was mainly responsible for setting up this memorial.
